Rascal Flatts is a well known American celebrity music band. It has three members, and the band’s composition has remained the same throughout the years: Gary LeVox – the lead vocal for the group, Jay DeMarcus – the bass guitarist, who also plays keyboards/piano and also does vocals for the group, and JoeDon Rooney - who is the lead guitarist and vocalist for the group. The Ohioan country group have had many popular hits in America over the past decade. You can listen to their music or download their albums while you are online playing Foxybingo.com or doing your weekly food shop on the web. Their most popular hits have been Bless the Broken Road and These days, which both reached number 1 in the US Country Charts. Two of the members are also related, being second cousins.
The band was founded at a bar in Tennessee. The Fiddle and Steel Guitar Bar was the birthplace, and it’s where second cousins Jay DeMarcus and Gary Levox, who are used to the music industry, as it “runs in the family” (as many members of their extended family are either artists or working in the industry) first established the band. In 1992, the first of the three members who got into music as a professional business was Jay DeMarcus, who, upon moving to Nashville, became a member of a predominantly Christian band by the name of East to West. Five years later, his cousin Gary Levox was finally convinced to quit his job and go into the music industry. Soon after that, in 1997, DeMarcus joined another band led by Chely Wright, and it’s here that he met the third member of today’s Rascal Flatts – JoeDon Rooney. LeVox and DeMarcus were already working in a nightclub on Printer’s Alley, and one night their guitarist (who was only a part time member of the band) had trouble getting to the event. This is when Rooney stepped in, after being invited by DeMarcus, and filled the guitarist’s place. That night, the three had success in the club, and the audience started asking what the band’s name was. As the three were playing together for the first time, they didn’t have a name, and when they were approached by a man in the audience telling them about how he once had a garage band called “Rascal Flatts” they liked it so much that they adopted this as their permanent name. Ever since then, the three (Levox, DeMarcus and Rooney) started playing together in the “Rascal Flatts“. They quickly composed a few demos, and when they approached Lyric Street Records, they were were so impressed that they signed the band in late 1999, marking the beginning of the constant rise of Rascal Flatts.
Between 2000 and 2004 the group experienced their first shot at success in the music industry. It started in early 2000, when their debut single (“Prayin’ for Daylight”, one of the songs that was featured in the demo sent to the record label before the band signed with them) hit the airwaves and it became a country-wide success. The song quickly reached first place on the Billboard Country section, and it was only the first out of four hits that would come from the same album – the next were “I’m Movin’ On”, “While You Loved Me”, and “This Everyday Love”, which came in nineth, seventh and fourth places in the same Billboard country chart. The Academy of Country Music chose “I’m Movin’ On” the 2002 Song of the Year.
The band became extremely well known in the United States, and became celebrities in 2002 when they released their second album called “Melt”, who was very well received by audience. The first single extracted from the album, “These Days”, was their biggest success yet, as it quickly hit number one. The album had proven to be a huge success, as it followed with three more hits – “I Melt”, which ranked in at number Two, “Love You Out Loud”, which was #3, and “Mayberry”, which was the second number one of the album. Out of all of these hits, “I Melt” had a video that was banned by a famous Country television channel.
The third album was not as well received as the first two. Entitled “Feels Like Today”, the first single extracted from the album was one with the same name, and it only managed to hit #9, a position which it quickly lost. Even though the album faced less success than the previous ones, it was to be host to one of their biggest achievements and the single best achievement to date: “Bless the Broken Road” (a song written by Jeff Hanna and Marcus Hummon, which only managed to place at #42 just a few years prior), who became a Number One, and the longest running number one song to this day – lasting for five weeks at the top of the country charts. After this album was released, the crew followed with another number one hit – “Fast Cars and Freedom”. All in all, 2000-2004 was a prolific period for Rascal Flatts, as it marked the beginning of the band’s huge success.
The early period in Rascal Flatts’ discography is by far not the only one that’s good. “Me and My Gang” was the next album released by the group, and Rascal Flatts experienced a lot of success upon releasing it. This album also marked the beginning of the group’s collaboration with a new producer – Dann Huff. The very first single taken out of the album was “What Hurts the Most”, and it was an instant chart entry. The album continued with four more hits, ranging from number ones to top ten hits. In 2007 Rascal Flatts continued with another album, called “Still Feels Good”, which was equally well received by everybody, from critics to celebrity fans.
Today’s Rascal Flatts are not that different from the beginning. They have since released a Greatest Hits album, and they followed that with yet another album, called “Unstoppable”, which seems to perfectly describe the band’s attitude toward the future. The group is also very active in the touring scene, and they have an impressive list of achievements outside of the music industry. With such a rich heritage that we have from Rascal Flatts, it’s hard not to be a fan.
