The latest celebrity gossip is that MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann, the much talked about, much maligned anchor of the fledging network has agreed to end his controversial show and leave the liberal giant. Olbermann began his tenure at MSNBC in 2003, after beginning his career as a sports report, coming to prominence with ESPN’s Sports Center. He has a long history of messy departures, often butting heads with management in a very public way. The most recent episode ends a months long battle between Olbermann and MSNBC management. Originally suspended in November for making campaign contributions to guests of his show, Olbermann has been trying to separate himself from the failing news station ever since the trouble began.
In September, Olbermann hired new agents, firing his long time agent Jean Sage, who had been with him for most of his rocky career. The settlement that has reportedly been reached by Olbermann and MSNBC would keep him off of television for at six to nine months and pays him in excess of $7 million dollars. Attorney Patty Glaser, who negotiated the exit deal for Conan O’Brien, helped carve out the pact for Olbermann. Details of the internal strife between Olbermann and station management as well as other on air talent is now coming to the surface. Olbermann was reportedly rude and short with almost everyone at the station, sometimes refusing to come into work and snapping at fellow co-workers. His mercurial personality has been part of his success but also a leading factor in him having many infamous run ins with the companies he has been a part of. Jeff Zucker, the head of NBC Universal, grew increasingly displeased with Olbermann’s antics, including threatening to go protest his November suspension by going on national television. Olbermann’s departure leaves tough shoes to fill for MSNBC. Olbermann steadily grew his audience in recent years, even though he still fell far behind Fox News in the rankings.
The new MSNBC nightly lineup will feature Lawrence O’Donnell taking over for Olbermann at 8, Rachel Maddow at 9 and Ed Schultz at 10. MSNBC feels that they have a winning formula with their new lineup but the results are yet to be seen. Olbermann’s next move is unknown, as he is reportedly unable to discuss his settlement or next course of action. It is widely speculated that he will return to television just in time for the 2012 election cycle.
