The show’s premise is the same all over the world: it’s a celebrity dancing contest, where the contestants are actually not always and not only dancers. There are ordinary people (and also professional dancers, in some cases) that are paired up with celebrities from the country that hosts the show, and together they compete for the grand prize. The audience at home is able to vote on their favorite couple, and they are given a limited time to do so. Depending on the country the show is aired in, there might be slight alterations to the “main” schedule. For instance, in Romania a celebrity is paired up with a person that’s fighting for a social case (a sick relative, etc.).
There has also been a World Championship for the Dancing with the Stars show, where contestants from all 32 countries participated in a worldwide shot, which took place in Mexico. There were two world championships held so far, both of them in Mexico. The first one took place in 2007, and it gathered teams from Costa Rica, Colombia, Mexico, Ecuador, Panama, Slovakia, Paraguay and Romania. The top three at the end of the show were Mexico, Romania and Argentina. In 2010, the teams included Colombia, Argentina, Romania, France, the United Kingdom, the United States, Spain, South Africa, Mexico and Peru, and the ones that ranked on the podium at the end of the show were the United States (First place), Spain (second place) and Argentina, with third place.
In the United States, the celebrity show is called Dancing with the Stars, and it premiered on ABC in the summer of 2005. More recently, it finished its 11th season, and the 12th season is announced to begin shortly. The permanent celebrity judges on the show are Bruno Tonioli, an Italian coreographer, Len Goodman, a professional ballroom dancer, and Carrie Ann Inaba, a dancer, choreographer, and actress. The first eleven winning celebrity couples were: Kelly Monaco and Alec Mazo (Season 1), Drew Lachey and CHeryl Burke (Season 2), Emmitt Smith and Cheryl Burke (Season 3), Apolo Anton Ohno and Julianne Hough (Season 4), Helio Castroneves and Julianne Hough (Season 5), Kristi Yamaguchi and Mark Ballas (Season 6), Brooke Burke and Derek Hough (Season 7), Shawn Johnson and Mark Ballas (Season 8), Donny Osmond and Kym Johnson (Season 9), Nicole Scherzinger and Derek Hough (Season 10) and finally, Jennifer Grey and Derek Hough (Season 11).
Right now, all eyes are on the twelfth season, which is just about to start, with the beginning date set on March 21st.
