Celebrities and gossip

The past decade has marked the rise and rise of the internet, a brand new level of entertainment where you, the common user, decide everything about what you get to see. It’s one of the largest revolutions that the contemporary age has ever seen, and it marks the slow downfall of the other entertainment venues. Slowly, but surely, we will start to see a decline in every other aspect of entertainment in favor of the internet. But no matter what type of entertainment we are after, there is always one constant in the whole matter: the subjects that we are after when we seek entertainment.

And our current culture seems to follow one dominant aspect: celebrities. Celebrities have always been a part of our social life, and, whether we realize it or not, we are always going to talk about them, we are always going to be interested in them and we’re always going to have them as role models in our lives. Celebrities have been a part of modern life as far back as we can remember. In ancient times, famous men would become legends over time, and everybody would hear stories about them. In more recent years, celebrities have been getting much more exposure – and it’s much easier for them to do so, as the technology has evolved in such a way that we can keep track with every aspect of their lives without too much hassle. At the turn of the last century, celebrities were few and far between, but they were still getting exposure through press and radio. Over time, movie stars began getting the spotlight more and more, and right now the demand for celebrity news, gossip and everything that revolves around famous people is at an all-time high. There are TV programs, countless magazines and an incredible amount of celebrity blogs, all dedicated to delivering the celebrity gossip and the latest snoop about your favorite celebs.

Today, there seems to be a particular group of people who has an incredibly easy time becoming famous. They are the ones that get the most exposure due to the nature of their jobs. We’re talking about the actors, models, sports personalities and everybody who makes a living exposing themselves to the public eye. Despite the fact that each and every country has their own ranking system (and their own preferences, at that), we’re always going to have these categories of people filling up each and every cover of magazines or airtime in famous people TV shows.

Celebrity is something that can benefit everybody. You, the reader, can (and probably do) look up to famous people and see them as an example of what you should do and how you should act – celebrities often forget about this tremendous responsibility that they have and they will often act as though they’ve forgotten. And celebrities, on the other hand, will get the most special of treatment, just by being themselves. There are countless famous people from all over the world who have used their fame to get involved in extremely important acts, like charity events, politics and so on. Bono, the lead singer for U2, is probably the most well known example. In addition to him being an extraordinary artist, Bono is always involved in charity events and drawing attention to the most dire needs of mankind. For this, he has received many awards and a lot of recognition, but he keeps on moving and his charitable events don’t seem to end very soon.

Rich people can also be celebrities just by being rich. Everybody is attracted to wealth and everybody wants to see how the lucky ones spend their fortune -  remember how we were talking about responsibility? Well, the rich people have lots more of it, as they’re responsible for setting the tone. You all know Bill Gates – he tops the charts for the richest man alive for years now. However, something that you might have not known is the fact that Bill Gates is very involved in charitable events, as his foundations help countless millions from all over the world. The man has even donated a huge part of his fortune in order to help the impoverished, and he has donated billions (no, not millions. Billions!) of dollars each year.

Today’s social scene makes it extremely easy for celebrities to interact with their fans. In the past, the only way you could feel connected to your favorite celebs’ lives was if you were to watch all of the news pieces. But today, with Twitter, Facebook, blogs and everything in between, it’s much easier for the celebs to interact with their fans. It’s not unusual for them to go on Twitter and answer to their fans’ questions, or go on Facebook and organize a contest of some sort.

Another thing that the technology age has brought us is the easiness with which a person can become a celebrity. In the olden days, as we’ve pointed out, if you were an actor, a singer, an artist or even a politician, it would have been very easy for you to get noticed. However, if you didn’t know the right people, chances were that you wouldn’t become known to anybody except your circle of friends, and their friends as well. But today, if you’re truly talented it’s extremely easy for you to get your face out there. And don’t think we’re talking pure theory out here – Justin Bieber, one of today’s most sought after celebrities, started his journey in the music industry through… YouTube! That’s right, the multi-award winning prodigy started by uploading videos of himself singing and that caught the attention of higher-ups at Universal, which quickly signed him on. The rest, as they say, is history, and you’ve probably already heard it.

All in all, what would our life be without celebrities? We wouldn’t have anybody to look up to, anybody to talk about and, overall, our life would have been extremely dull. Thank God for celebs!
