With the growing popularity of both live and online poker in recent years, and the constant introduction of new and exciting poker shows and luxurious tournaments with millions of dollars in prize money, it is no wonder women are starting to see poker as more than just an excuse for their husbands to lose their salaries and compare beer bellies. Now the girls want in on the action, and they seem to know perfectly well what they are doing.
What might have been someone’s dream 10 years ago has now become more than just a reality.

Today’s Poker women are being sponsored by the biggest poker rooms, they are collecting WSOP and EPT bracelets, competing against each other in Ladies-only leagues and events, and posing a great challenge for even the best men in the game. Two poker girls in particular have been exceptionally prominent and successful in recent years. Both of them very talented. Both of them PokerStars Pros Team members. Both of them very rich thanks to poker. And both of them very beautiful.
First, we have Vanessa Rousso. This gorgous 27 year old woman from New York has majored in economics, with a minor in political sciences, in less than 2,5 years – an all-time record in the history of Duke University. As if that wasn’t enough, she took up law school immediately afterwards and did well enough to qualify for the Chaplin Scolarship. Vanessa’s interest in poker spiked in 2004 during her summer brake – a date which marks the beginning of her lucrative career.
As of January 2011, her total live tournament winnings are estimated at over $3,000,000. She attracted the most attention during the 2009 EPT Monte Carlo, where she managed to take down the No Limit Hold ‘Em High Rollers Event, netting $1,021,713. Other than that, she has won $358,964 at the 2010 Doyle Brunson Five Diamon World Poker Classic, $250,000 at the 2009 NBC Heads-up Championship, $285,000 at the 2006 4th Borgata Open, $263,000 at the…. You get the picture. And to top it all off, Vanessa Rousso currently owns and operates the Big Slick Boot Camp firm, which specializes in organizing poker events, seminars, and tournament strategy workshops for male and female poker players alike. Let’s hope she can’t cook though – that would be overkill.
The next poker woman I would like to mention is Liv Boeree. A bass guitar player, TV show hostess, semi-professional model, and an astrophysics graduate. Wait what – astrophysics? Yes, astrophysics.
Perhaps what is most unique about Liv is her purely natural talent for poker; she was good at it from the get-go and never really spent much time on hand or equity analysis. Her popularity peaked in 2010 when she managed to come in 1st at the European Poker Tour San Remo No Limit Hold ‘Em Chamionship – a feat which was worth a whopping $1,750,000. All in all she has won over $2,100,000 so far, and that’s not even including her online poker and cash games results.
But Vanessa and Liv aren’t the only women with something to say. Consider Annette Obrestad ($3,000,000), Beth Shak ($500,000), Sandra Naujoks ($1,840,310) Vanessa Selbest ($4,000,000), Erica Schoenberg ($750,000), Lily Mizrachi ($1,800,000). And that doesn’t even scratch the surface.
These are really great times for everyone in poker; the casinos are happy because more women poker players equals more money. The women are happy because they can make it as rich celebrities without leaving for Hollywood. And the men are happy because they simply like women. Let us only hope no one comes up with the clever idea of attracting more players by moving tournaments from casinos to shopping malls, and all will be fine.
